Project Description
Work Package 8 of the Anchoring Innovation program, of which the envisaged research project will be part, investigates cultural interaction in a globalizing world. The history of the Hellenistic period has become a history of intercultural contacts and globalizing tendencies in especially the ‘new’ areas of Hellenistic world. But what about the effects on ‘old Greece’ (defined as the areas where Greek culture was traditionally found before the Hellenistic era, such as mainland Greece and the islands, W. Asia Minor, Sicily and Magna Graecia)? How did the inhabitants of old Greece respond to these global changes?
We are particularly interested in the effect on urban culture and urban structures in this period. How were the cities and polities of Greece affected by new power structures? By what means did new hegemonic powers – be they Hellenistic rulers, newly founded leagues, or Rome - establish themselves in the Greek world? What were their (cultural, political, institutional, economic) anchors? What was the effect of these changes on Greek cities and on urban culture more broadly. What were the effects of interactions with, e.g., Persia? Where and by what means was common ground created between the old and the new, both globally and locally? How was language used to establish or contest hegemony?
We invite structured PhD or postdoc proposals (title, research question, scholarly background, aims, method, corpus) that fit aspects of this research agenda and focus on political, socio-economic, and cultural transformations in the light of Anchoring Innovation. More information about the Anchoring Innovation research agenda of OIKOS can be found on the website (www.anchoringinnovation.nl), including an article by Ineke Sluiter, entitled “Anchoring Innovation: a Classical Research Agenda” (Anchoring Innovation: A Classical Research Agenda | European Review | Cambridge Core).
Topics may include (BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO): Hellenistic settlements and colonies; Roman settlers and settlements; migration; urban hierarchies and urbanism; military strategies and structures; sport and festivals; mortuary practices; new cults and religious practices; the representation of kingship and political powers. We are particularly interested in proposals that combine epigraphic, archaeological and historical approaches.Host Institution
