This lecture can be attended in person or online.
From 23 to 25 June 2022 the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome (KNIR) hosts a workshop on the reception of Golden Age rhetoric from Antiquity up to the present. The workshop, organized by dr. Susanna de Beer (Head of Ancient Studies KNIR), Ruben Poelstra (Leiden University) and Louis Verreth (Leiden University), is dedicated to the question how, throughout history, the classical concept of ‘Golden Age’ has been used to frame subsequent periods of time, either as a Golden Age returned or – in contrast – as a period in need of its return.
The workshop is the initiative of the Work Package “Reception of Antiquity” of the Anchoring Innovation project in collaboration with OIKOS.
You are cordially invited to the public event which will be held at the KNIR (and online) on this occasion: the public lecture given by dr. Luke Houghton (Royal Holloway, University of London / UCL), entitled:
“The Return of the Golden Age: Sycophancy and Subversion.”
To attend in person, please send an email to secretary@knir.it. To register for the livestream, please use the form which you can find on the web page of the event.
